

From 1965-2004 John Curran performed with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra, and from 1970-1980 was Principal Flutist with the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra. Presently he is performing with the Rhode Island Philharmonic Community Orchestra.
His flute studies were with James Pappoutsakis at the New England Conservatory, followed by advanced studies with Julius Baker and Robert Stallman in New York, and with Marianne Gedigian in Boston.
Mr. Curran teaches flute and chamber music at Brown University, the Music School of the Rhode Island Philharmonic and St. George's School in Newport, as well as in his private studio. He also coaches the woodwinds of the RI Philharmonic Youth Orchestras and the Brown University Orchestra.
In 1998 he was invited to teach masterclasses in Austria, and has also taught masterclasses at Brown University.
He performed recitals in Austria in 1998, in Germany in 2001 and presents an annual recital at Brown University.
In 2006, he was asked by the Governor of Rhode Island to perform as flute soloist for the September 11 Memorial ceremony at the Rhode Island State House.
Mr. Curran plays a 14k gold Sankyo flute that was made for Julius Baker in 1978 and purchased from Mr. Baker in 1980.
